We all know that when thoughts are repeated, they become beliefs and then they become truths in our minds, don’t we? It’s the same with children’s minds. In fact, the transformation of thoughts into realities begins in the very years of childhood. The practice of transforming negative thoughts into positive affirmations can, therefore, be a child’s best friend and an extremely valuable tool.
Here are some examples of thoughts that many children typically experience on a particular day
To be great, I have to…
I’m not one of them, I’m an outsider.
Nobody likes me.
My day is going to suck.
Does that look familiar? Those are claims, too, but not the positive kind. Not unlike the things adults say to themselves. All the more reason to take them at an early age and change the soundtrack that’s playing in their heads. I had a teacher who once said that “our thoughts become our prayers,” so let’s help them turn the dial on their radio station.
Louise Hay, author of the wonderful children’s book “I Think, I Am” gives some tips on how children can create their own positive affirmations.
“I always start an affirmation with positive words as I can, I am, I want, I have.”
“Say your affirmation over and over again every time you think about it.”
“Say an affirmation especially when you have a lot of unhappy, negative thoughts.
“Look in the mirror and say you’re positive affirmation out loud.”
“Write down your affirmation in a notebook or journal.”
The reason positive affirmations are so powerful is that if practiced enough, they can become habitual ways of thinking, eradicating negative ones, like the Black Friday shoppers who make a good purchase. This may not happen overnight, but with a little practice and a little time, you’ll be surprised at how much children’s attitudes change.
