The first weeks of summer are a magical time of outdoor play, (a little) late sleep and lazy afternoons, but when the heat and routine of summer sets in, the phrase “Mommy! I’m bored! Summer is a great time to do a decorating project, and it’s fun to freshen up your child’s room before school starts again. If you’re looking for an innovative and flexible way to add color to your child’s room – without breaking the bank – consider do-it-yourself wall patterns.

Painting your own murals is a great way to help you create playful wall art that fits in with any décor. Best of all, the patterns come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and prices, so you can decide how much you want to paint – you can paint a little butterfly or your child’s name on the bed or a whole jungle in your playroom! Here are some fun ways to get your kids involved in decorating this summer with wall patterns.

1. Let your child help you choose the colors Whether you plan to buy new bedding or create a new look with existing bedding, children can help with color choices and decide which colors go where. Get creative! Why not paint a purple monkey or a pink unicorn? Your child will love to show off his work and his idea!

2. Create a place for new art every day: use slate paint to fill in the outlines of a butterfly or frog or even a race car. Then your children can use colored chalk to draw new frog faces, design whimsical new butterfly wings, or create and recreate the car of their dreams!

3. Create a hand-painted memory: If you don’t have confidence in your painting skills or want to create a painting you want to keep, buy some pre-assembled canvases from your local craft store. Use craft paint or colored pencils and a pattern to create your own hand-painted mural art that you can hang on your child’s wall with a colored ribbon. You can even give your child his or her own canvas to paint with.

4. Do a volunteer project with your older children Spend a few evenings and paint a mural at a children’s hospital, church daycare center, or other non-profit organization that works for children. Let your teens choose a theme and decide where to place the mural patterns to let their creative side flow! They’ll leave with a sense of accomplishment and pride in a selfless but fun effort!
