It’s amazing what can be achieved with a little thought, a little time and a little imagination. Having an artistic gift always helps, but even if you don’t have any artistic or technical gifts, there are still ways to decorate your home on a small budget. Of course, you can buy anything new at expensive prices in the best stores or you can browse the flea market, eBay and other auction sites, charity shops, and flea markets.

It’s amazing what you can find if you take the time to hunt. Local advertising will tell you about garage sales in your area, trunk sales, or other charity events where you can often find a bargain. Then, of course, you will have to use your imagination to renew the deal you have made. There are thousands of craft sites on the Internet, such as home craft sites, that stock virtually everything you can think of, from wool fabric to 1kg containers of resin powder plus a catalyst to make the resin decorations transparent.

In the UK there are a number of large craft shops called Hobbycraft, which also sell just about any craft material you can imagine. To renew your bargaining finds, these are the places to find your materials. To bring the fabrics that may have some yellow stains to life, use the dimensional fabric paints, made by Dylon. As I said, you don’t have to be particularly artistic, just imaginative. If you place the fabric on a flat surface, you should be able to see the extent of the yellowing.

Then take the Dylon dimensional fabric paintings, choose a color, and outline the yellowed area with the color. Allow the paint to dry and then use other colors for decoration – you could use zeros and black and white crosses as a theme. Dylon also makes a set of fabric drawing pencils – a package of eight fabric pens assorted in different colors to make amateur drawings much easier. When you finish painting the canvas, these colors can be fixed with the iron. Now there is also a “non-iron fixer”: These look like markers, are available in twelve colors, and can be washed in the washing machine.

Decorating your kitchen on a budget is also easy. Believe me, you don’t have to spend a fortune to buy new kitchen units. I bought a stock of “corpse” flat cabinets on eBay for less than $34.00. Then I went to the nearest hardware store and bought new doors to fit each of these cabinets, and in no time I had a completely redesigned kitchen. With sealed cork tiles on the floor and some new fabric on the window, my kitchen looked brand new. The bargains made at yard sales, almost new sales or garage sales are usually in good shape. Even those that look a little battered can be made to look like new again with a little TLC, in fact, they often look better than new!
