HOW TO MAKE A KAWAII NOTEBOOKS – TOASTED BREAD AND CHOCOLATE | aPasos Crafts DIY
It has been said that D.I.Y. has never been as popular as it is today, and if you consider the dozens of TV ads for D.I.Y. stockists, not only does this seem to be the case, but it also suggests that it has never been easier to carry out a D.I.Y. project. We hear the term D.I.Y. almost every day, and while almost everyone who hears it knows that the term is an acronym for the phrase “Do It Yourself,” another definition may be problematic. The official definition of D.I.Y. is that it is a term used to describe the construction, repair, or modification of something without the help of paid professionals or experts. Although the term has been attributed to the arts and crafts movement and even the pirate radio and indie rock scene in recent years, the term is more commonly used when applied to DIY.
The term “D.I.Y.” in relation to DIY projects attempted by individuals became commonplace in the 1950s. Arguably, the introduction of home video systems (HVS) in the 1970s gave a considerable boost to the D.I.Y. movement by allowing consumers to view audio-visual demonstrations of basic D.I.Y. procedures. (created in particular by experienced D.I.Y. instructors) from the comfort of their own homes rather than having to attend educational courses (as before). It is clear, however, that the greatest progress in the D.I.Y. movement came in the mid-1990s when advisory pages and online bulletin boards were created especially for D.I.Y. enthusiasts, and these pages enabled inexperienced people to get help, advice and expert guidance on the D.I.Y. projects they were planning. The mid-1990s also saw the introduction of television programs aimed specifically at an audience of D.I.Y. enthusiasts of all skill levels and the creation of entire channels dedicated to D.I.Y. Both events were an attempt to attract the growing number of D.I.Y. enthusiasts who were engaged in their own projects (ranging from craft skills such as knitting to major home renovations).
The emergence of a more practical and “hands-on” culture since the 1950s has led to a huge increase in the number of D.I.Y. dealers, who have gone from small, privately owned businesses to national and even international chains. This almost surplus of decorative and other D.I.Y. materials (compared to previous decades) means that it has never been cheaper to absorb D.I.Y.
