A couple from Bath who wants to bring some of the creativity of their time at art school back into their lives has brought together one or more cooperatives to organize an open day for art design and crafts. Ben & Pip Wynne decided to hold their first Open Day last November, which gave them a goal to prepare for. “We thought we’d start by holding the fair at our premises to reduce the overhead and costs of the event. We also changed the name of the event from Craft Fair to Design and Craft Open House to get away from the stereotypical idea of a craft fair and to broaden the scope of sales,” says Ben.

Ben & Pip say the reason they started planning the Open House was a desire to be more creative, build connections in their community, and bring creative people with like-minded ideas together. After a successful first event in November 2009, they plan to hold Creative Days to encourage people to learn new creative skills from each other, creating a sense of sharing, community, and interdependence. At the November sale, all sorts of items were on sale, including a wide range of Christmas decorations, flags, candles from old teacups, reusable bags, tea warmers, handmade cards, framed photos, and jewelry. The first sale had an amazing turnout, with almost 100 customers, generating revenue of over £900. To create the right atmosphere for the open day, Ben & Pip says: “We try to create a warm, friendly and friendly-looking environment where people can browse, buy, eat and drink. We had plenty of tea, coffee, and cakes available for hungry shoppers, the proceeds of which were donated to local charities. Some customers said they would rather have their shopping experience with us than wandering around the center of Bath,” says Ben.

Based on the success of the Christmas Open House, the next event will take place on 12 June 2010. In the focus of this event, Ben says: “It will definitely have a summer theme, with the event extending from the house to the garden and the summer house. Ten producers are expected to sell their products and attend the event, so it will be a great opportunity to shop locally, support local artisans, and join in the spirit of the community. This time there will be more of the same products, plus handmade children’s toys, bird food, cutting edge design, and a variety of textiles from bags to cushions.
